SUMMARY:Gullah Campfire Supper with Stories and Songs: Emancipation Proclamation Event
DESCRIPTION:We’re excited about our next farm event that will celebrate the reading of the Emancipation Proclamation that took place January 1\, 1863 at Camp Saxton the present day location of the Navy Hospital Beaufort. Our celebration will reenact portions of the original program including stories and songs.  There will be a Civil War wedge tent\, a soldier’s haversack and mess kit. Hear journal accounts from actual program attendees along with the history and purpose of Camp Saxton.  Get a feel for the excitement of the meaning of the document and the hope it inspired.  Guests will be served a meal that will include dishes similar to that served at the program at Camp Saxton plus dishes that are traditionally served for a Gullah New Year’s Day supper.  Expect a special outdoor event that commemorates a very special historic occasion.  Our programs are educational and family friendly. \n

DESCRIPTION:Eggstravaganza is one of Moore Farms Botanical Garden’s most EGG-ceptional events of the year. More than 20\,000 eggs will be laid out throughout the garden for children to hunt. We will also feature crafts and a surprise visit by the Easter bunny himself! We will offer two different egg hunt locations within the garden\, separated by age. Upon arrival\, children will receive a wristband separating them into one of two different groups – Group A: 4 years and Under OR Group B: 5yrs. + \nEggstravaganza begins at 10am with crafts\, facepainting\, and more! Egg hunts will begin PROMPTLY at 11am. \nEveryone attending Eggstravaganza must secure a ticket\, including parents and children under 1 yr of age\, to allow us to control the number of guests in the garden. \nALL ticket proceeds from this event benefit the J. Paul Truluck Creative Arts and Sciences Magnet School \nEggstravaganza is a fund-raising event\, therefore\, the event will take place RAIN OR SHINE. In the event of severe weather\, ticket holders will be notified should MFBG staff choose to cancel the event for the safety of our guests. DESCRIPTION:Our farm is hosting our annual Decoration Day celebration.  Though now referred to as Memorial Day\, in most Gullah communities it’s still known as Decoration Day.  Come learn the history of the holiday\, its connection to the Gullah community and how it’s been observed.  Our guest speaker this year is Mr. Mitch Mitchell “a proud graduate of Robert Smalls High School and South Carolina State University\, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration\, and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the United States Marines Corps.\nMr. Mitchell is a retired U.S. Air Force major general\, retired commercial airline pilot\, and a retired Federal Aviation Administration pilot check airman.\nHe has served as a board member for Beaufort History Museum and Penn Center. He also served on the Beaufort County Planning Commission\, and as a community organizer. In addition to his service as a City of Beaufort councilman\, Mitch also partnered with community members\, the City of Beaufort\, and Beaufort County in reopening the Charles Lind Brown Community Center and the naming of its pool in honor of Mr. Alvin Settles.\nCouncilman Mitchell is a 2021 recipient of The Museum of Flight Pathfinder Awards\, a 2022 Leadership Beaufort graduate\, and a South Carolina Riley Institute Diversity Leaders Initiative Fellow.\nHe and his wife\, Kelly\, are proud parents of three sons\, three daughters-in-law\, and five grandchildren.”\nVisit the graves of United States Colored Troops servicemen buried in the Coffin Point Plantation Cemetery on St. Helena Island\, hear a bit of their service record and join in decorating their graves.  Then come hear the stories and songs on the farm\, Morning Glory Homestead\, as we commemorate this special occasion.\nTickets are available at our website.  www.morninggloryhomestead.com\nThere are discounts for military service members\, active duty\, guardsmen and women and retired.  Discounts also to EM and law enforcement personnel.

We will discuss a brief history of houseplants\, houseplant care\, trending houseplants\, and characteristics of the Aroid plant family. Each attendee will be given a houseplant of their choice and will be given information on how to care for that houseplant. The houseplants that I have selected for you are all the “original houseplants” that were among the first recorded during the Victorian Era. Bring a piece of history home with you and leave with all the knowledge you need to add plants to your indoor décor.

SUMMARY:Class: Indigo Dyeing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, participants will learn some of the history of indigo and its part in South Carolina history\, how to make a vat\, and dye cotton fabric using Shibori tie-dye methods. These techniques result in beautiful\, unique patterns. Each participant will use these methods to dye two 18” x18” cotton napkins and a 28” x 28” kitchen towel. \nKelly Fort and her husband\, Dale\, own Pluff Mudd Farm—a small fiber farm on Wadmalaw Island\, SC. They raise pygora goats\, sheep\, and flax for fiber; as well as indigo for dyeing the fiber. Kelly began her indigo journey growing and dyeing with Indigofera suffruticosa in the early 2000s. Through classes\, books\, fiber friends\, and research the knowledge and enrichment continue. Much of her time is spent making dye paste from her plants\, so she can continue to dye throughout the year. This paste will also be used in the workshop. \nParticipants are asked to bring their own rubber gloves\, like the gloves used to wash dishes.
